Information and communication technology is the most powerful tool of communication ever created. With a click of a mouse or a push of a button, it has made life easier, faster and definitely more convenient for us. The Internet has become an indispensable part of the lives of Gen X and Gen Y as well as those younger. Learning has become easier and communication is more fun.
Though it is an encouraging development, we must remember that children remain the most vulnerable segment of the society. Exposing them to the unsupervised cyberworld is like exposing to danger.
The very platform that can do so much good for them is also the one that has many “predators” waiting for their opportunities. The chances for children to be exposed to pornography is high and encountering sexual predators are even higher.
We cannot deny our children the opportunity to engage and learn from technology. Denying them to be socially active online will only make them rebel and find other avenues which could be even more hazardous.
As responsible parents or guardians, we should learn everything there is to know about Internet safety and guide our children on how to use it safely. Taking an active interest in our children’s online interaction is also another way of keeping up with their activities.
